The new policy was implemented on Wednesday, Jan. 18, the company announced.
Customers are encouraged to bring reusable bags or containers to transport their purchases, representatives said.
The decision was made after the state banned single-use plastic bags as of July 2021.
Representatives for Walmart said they decided to eliminate paper bags at checkout counters as well due to the environmental impact.
“Eliminating single-use bags in Connecticut is part of our effort to reduce waste,” said Jane Ewing, senior vice president of Walmart Sustainability. “Our customers want to be engaged on this journey, and we remain committed to making the sustainable choice the everyday choice.”
Walmart also got rid of single-use bags at stores in Canada, Mexico, Vermont, Maine, and New Jersey.
This month, the company plans to expand the policy to stores in New York and Colorado, representatives said.
